 “This set of paintings immediately caught my attention as I looked over the work in the show. While a very peaceful composition, I saw in this a degree of subtlety that was worthwhile. The studio piece demonstrates an improvement in the atmospheric perspective offered by this type of scene, adjustments to the scale and placement of elements that improved the composition, and a very careful handling of the edge quality of the trees in the foreground, something that is easily lost or overworked when one enlarges a much smaller painting. To me this demonstrated the kind of deliberation that one would expect from a studio painting based on a field study.” - Anthony Sell

“Instead of painting the same scene, Barbara painted an interesting part of the study painting. Painting a chandelier on a gold background offers the viewers interesting perspectives at many angles. SIZE LIMIT: One piece may be 12x12 and max 4 1/4" frame and the other as big as 20x16 and max 4 1/4" frame. All work must be framed and wired!

Winners WIPAPA: 2015 We Came, We Saw, We Painted Field to Finish Juried Show Congratulations!!

The practice of artists going outdoors to capture in paint what the camera does not see in terms of color notes, shapes, edges and so on is as old as tubed paint. Many artists then take these small studies into their studios to create larger paintings using them as reference. Some of these small studies indeed stand on their own. This was the challenge for We Came, We Saw, We Painted WIPAPA's annual juried show at the Art*Bar. It is a small peek into the mind of an artist and a great reason to paint en plein air. I have shown both paintings for each winning artist.

A lot of good stuff in this painting, Beautifully subtle warm greens with a sophisticated variety that yet hold together. The use of atmosphere to push back that distant row of trees is well done. I also like the changes from the study, adding sky with clouds that are also well executed. The light violet gray shadow side of the clouds are a perfect value to make them feel buoyant. Well done on many levels, a very traditional landscape like this is not always appreciated for how hard it is to pull off.

Both the study and the studio piece have almost a dreamlike quality to them. Strong color and soft edges evoke a particular time of day and time of year. A fleeting moment between seasons that I find despite the boldness of the painting has a slightly wistful quality to it. I would like to experience walking through that day.

Plein Air at Art*Bar

“We Came We Saw We Painted” is an exhibition by Wisconsin Plein Air Painters Association artists on view at Art*Bar in Riverwest. Plein air is the lovely French term for paintings done outdoors, or put another way, in the plain air. 

Some of the most well-known artists who followed this method were the Impressionist painters. In 1870s France, they were a pretty radical bunch, but once the shock wore off over what they were doing, their painting techniques gained currency. The lasting effects of their methods and style can be seen in abundance here as plenty of artists follow in those footsteps, traipsing out to hills and fields far and wide to make art.

Some of the places in these paintings are familiar, like Judith VanGernert’s Port Washington Light. She shows two pieces together, as do many artists in the show, and this adds an interesting twist to the plein air idea. These pairs are frequently the study done on location and the other is the studio version. VanGernert initiates her project in watercolor and recreates the idea in oil paint. The composition is adjusted slightly and the atmosphere changes, from the somewhat darker, more pensive hues in watercolor to brighter, sunlit tones and thick impasto in the studio version.

There is a sense of immediacy in the framed studies and specificity of time and place. Lynn Rix’s snowy December 12th is a winter field dappled with burnished red bramble and blue shadows. The studio painting it inspires, First Snow, follows the field study closely but with a clearer touch for the details. Bramble becomes taller, stands up straighter and a neat path appears in the field.

Can you go back again and catch the same feeling? It is like recreating a memory and getting a do-over the second time around. The exhibition offers a peek into the artists’ working methods and development of ideas. As a viewer, perhaps you’ll come away with a preference for the brash impulses of first thoughts or a taste for studied brushwork of places reimagined and revisited.

Our thanks to our Judge Shelby Keefe for choosing this years winners. The artists were tasked to take a plein air study and paint a studio piece from it. Our Juror was able to award either the study, the studio piece or both. Of Interest: Shelby awarded all plein air studies only sighting "freshness and first response" as her reason. This show is hanging at the Art*Bar in Riverwest (722 E Burleigh, Milwaukee) until June 23rd. A portion of the sales go to AWE (http://www.awe-inc.org/) to fund the trucks helping kids to have availability to art in areas all around Milwaukee! Come and take in some art...have a drink and help some kids!!!
