Beyond the Canvas: Marn's "sort of" Plein Air Competition

Hey Guys...I don't know what you think of this. Technically
it is not a true plein air competition in the strict sense of plein air
but since that is how it is positioned I felt I needed to share this.

on Plein Air. Not into plein air? Wait! Don't delete this message

For this event MARN hopes to broaden the scope of plein air by
including all types of media, hence the name, Beyond the Canvas.  By
expanding this plein air event to include not just traditional forms
like oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pastels but also motion picture
(time-based media), photography/digital images, printmaking, and
sculpture/assemblage we contemporize the art form.

Participants will be required to use the location to inform their work

  1. Hi Everyone,

Just an update to Wendie's original post (and thanks for sharing!)

I've very excited to announce the CASH prizes for Beyond the Canvas! We just found out the Helen Bader Foundation is sponsoring the event which means we can guarantee the following cash awards in each category:

    1st place $250
    2nd place $100
    3rd place $50

PLUS Best in Show will receive an additional $500

    That's $2500 in cash prizes!

So now I KNOW what you're thinking.... "Drat! I missed the pre-registration deadline!"

Never fear, when we found out about the new sponsorship and the cash prizes it was going to allow we figured there might be some people out there who would want to participate but missed the pre-registration deadline. So, we've extended the pre-registration deadline to this Thursday, September 24th. That means you still have time to register at the $35 rate. But don't delay after Thursday you'll only be able to register in person at Derse (3800 W. Canal) on October 1st & 2nd for the regular rate of $45.

Go to MARNonline.com for the registration form. If paying by paypal you'll go to paypal.com, login to you paypal account, and click "send money" to paypal@marnonline.com (we'll still need your info e-mailed to us though!). Otherwise download the form, and send a check to
    MARN
    PO Box 713
    Milwaukee, WI 53201.

Then come on down to Derse on October 1st or 2nd to get your artist's packet and get to work!

Last but not least tell all your friends and collectors to join us at Helios, 1207 W Canal, for the show. The auction and preview will be open during gallery night and day October 15th 5-9pm and October 16th 10am-4pm with a collecting 101 lecture at 3pm. Then help us close out that auction and party the evening away at the closing reception from 4-8pm (auction will start to close at 6:45). Artists, please note, you are not flat out donating your work for the auction, you will receive 70% of the sale. And winners' pieces are also up for bids!

Remember this event has been made possible by the generous support of our Sponsors: The Helen Bader Foundation, Menomonee Valley Partners, Friends of the Hank Aaron State Trail, Helios, Proven Direct, HGA Architects, and Derse.

  2. I am going to go and am looking forward to being there. Has no one in any competition completed their painting at home? Yes, plein air is different than a staged portrait or still life, but the capturing of the space, the documentation of your presence, seems like the true sense of plein air. The competitions we enjoy are not alla prima specific. So for the casting of dispersions, I find it offensive.
